Girard 1968 reunion set
The Girard High School Class of 1968 is planning its fortieth class reunion. The event will be held Saturday, Aug. 9, at McMenamy’s Banquet Hall, 325 Youngstown-Warren Road in Niles. Cocktails will begin at 6 p.m. with a buffet dinner planned for 7 p.m. The First Degree will provide music for the evening. There will be an open bar throughout the evening until the events ends at 11 p.m. Reservations for the reunion are due by Monday, July 7.

New fundraiser at WYSU
Melinda Bowen-Houck of Boardman has joined the staff of WYSU-FM, the public radio service of Youngstown State University, as a development officer. She will assist with the development and implementation of all of the fundraising and marketing activities for the station, as well as working on the station’s special events and membership services.
Bowen-Houck comes to WYSU from the Youngstown-Warren Regional Chamber, where she had been an account executive since 2007. Prior to her work with the Chamber, she served for three years as the executive director for Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Mahoning Valley and Western Pa. She earned a bachelor of science in business administration from Youngstown State University. “Melinda will be a great addition to the staff”, said Ed Goist, senior development officer for WYSU-FM. “She brings a unique combination of front-line, non-profit development experience, and a love for public radio,” said Goist.
‘Cinderella Ball’ in fall
The Junior Civic League is seeking applicants for the 53rd annual “Cinderella Ball,” which will occur on Friday, Nov. 28. The program, titled “Captured in a Dream,” is seeking applicants for the fall event. Participants must have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher and a verified signature of their school principal or guidance counselor. In addition, applicants must be a high school senior in the fall of 2008, single, and a non-parent. A finalist will be eligible to receive a $2,500 scholarship.

Westminster ethics session
The Westminster College Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning will host “Ethical Decision Making” at 8 a.m. on July 30 in the McKelvey Campus Center. (The seminar begins with continental breakfast and concludes with a noon luncheon. A small fee will cover the program, all materials, and meals.) Featured speaker is Dr. R. Bruce Bickel of the Transformational Learning Group. His presentation draws from his experiences in the military, ministry, marketing, and finance. “In both our professional and personal lives we are confronted with scenarios calling for ethical decision making. But what is the ethical decision?
What are the appropriate criteria to guide us in decision-making? This program will assist participants in developing strategies for ethical decision making,” said Dr. Samuel Farmerie, Westminster professor of education emeritus and coordinator of the program.
