LOOP Youngstown Arts + Culture Center is announcing the purchase of 805 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown, calling it a major milestone in the organization’s vision to expand creative space and opportunity in the Mahoning Valley.
The building is located on the southwest corner of Mahoning and West avenues on the city’s West Side.
“After more than two years visiting sites, building our team and fleshing out the project, we are chuffed that, thanks to community support, we can make a jump for this great space in such a terrific location,” said LOOP chair Karen Schubert.
LOOP Youngstown is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to incubating arts and artists in the greater-Youngstown area.
“At a time when artists have lost vital spaces across the city, this project represents a powerful investment in Youngstown’s creative future,” said LOOP Youngstown in a prepared statement. “The reimagined building will become a vibrant arts hub offering up to 36 artist studios and arts organization offices as well as galleries, classrooms and gathering spaces. The space will support a range of artistic practices and will host open studios and monthly events that will be open to the public.”
“This new home for the arts will allow artists to strengthen their practices, share resources, build networks and diversify income, while emerging artist fellowships will provide support at critical moments in artists’ careers. Together, these efforts will help ensure that artists and creative youth can continue to see themselves—and their futures—in Youngstown,” added LOOP Youngstown.
The nonprofit organization recently received a donation of $5,000 from KO Consulting, LLC to sponsor a studio in a new art space to house artist studios, workshops, exhibitions and community programs. A studio will be named in recognition of KO Consulting’s gift.
“Arts, culture and community-based theatre centers are economic drivers. They make cities destinations and drive entrepreneurship and adjacent industries, such as dining, coffee, etc.,” said KO Consulting CEO/owner Kristen Olmi.
“It is critical that Youngstown continue to invest in understanding the connection between economic development and the arts–in many strategic forms. We believe in this project, just as the Loop believes in us. Supporting it is value-driven to the work we do, and we are happy to do it,” said Olmi.
LOOP is currently renting spaces, and interested artists and arts organizations are invited to complete a short survey at LoopYoungstown.org.
