Hopewell Theatre will open Lauren Gunderson’s “Silent Sky” on Friday, April 3 for a two-weekend run. Performances occur at 7:30 p.m. April 3-4, 10-11 and at 2 p.m. April 12.

Hopewell Theatre is located at 702 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown.

“Silent Sky” tells the true story of 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt, who worked at the Harvard Observatory charting stars, but was not permitted to touch a telescope. The play examines Leavitt’s groundbreaking scientific discoveries, the struggle for recognition and her personal life.

The play explores a woman’s place in society during a time of immense scientific and heart-bound discoveries. With music and math bursting forth onstage, “Silent Sky” shows how Henrietta and her female peers change the way the world understands the heavens and Earth.

The play will be directed by Traci Manning. Dante Bernard is stage manager. The cast includes Casey Murphy (Henrietta Leavitt), McKenna Lago (Margaret Leavitt), Emily Royer (Annie Cannon), Rhonny Dam (Williamina Fleming) and Shawn Lockaton (Peter Shaw).

“The cast and creative team have come together to create a magical night of theater,” said Manning, who makes her directorial debut.

Tickets are $22.50 (plus $2.50 in fees) for general admission and $17.30 (plus $2.30 in fees) for students and seniors. Tickets are available online at www.hopewelltheatre.org and at the door.
