Ice skating

Indoor facility offers public ice skating, figure skating, learn-to-skate programs, private skating lessons and learn-to-play hockey. Deep Freeze also serves as the practice facility for the Youngstown Phantoms.
Hess Ice Rink. 3365 Mitchell Road, New Castle, Pa. 16105. 724-658-6332. Hess opened in 1996. Indoor winter sports complex offers public skating, ice hockey, figure skating, ice-skating lessons, adult skating lessons (for beginners and advanced skaters) and league play. Home rink for the Lawrence County Lightning and adult hockey and competitive figure skating organizations. Open year round.

Skiing (cross country)
Austintown Township Park. 6000 Kirk Road, Austintown 44515. 330-799-6989. Offers cross-country skiing on 70 acres of open field areas.
Beaver Creek State Park. 12021 Echo Dell Road, East Liverpool 43920. 330-385-3091. The 3,038-acre state park offers limited cross-country skiing, weather permitting.
Boardman Township Park. 375 Boardman-Poland Road, Boardman 44512. 330-726-8105. The 227-acre township park offers cross-country skiing on hike and bike trails.
Geneva State Park. 4499 Padanarum Road, Geneva 44041. 330-466-8400. The 696-acre state park permits cross-country skiing in designated areas. Weather-conditions permitting, the facility offers ice fishing and a 4.5-mile snowmobiling trail.
Grand River Wildlife Area. 6686 state Route 534, West Farmington 44491. 330-889-3280. Offers cross-country skiing on a 20-foot wide swath surrounded by woods.
Howland Community Park. 2000 Rosegarden, Howland 44483. 330-856-9707. The multi-use township park covers 172 acres. Cross-country skiing in a make-your-own-trail setting. Also offers a paved walking course.
Maurice K. Goddard State Park. 684 Lake Wilhelm Road, Sandy Lake, Pa. 16145. 724-253-4833. The south side of the John C. Oliver Multi-Purpose Trail Loop offers hiking, biking and cross-country skiing.
Mill Creek MetroParks. Youngstown, Boardman Township. 330-702-3000. Skiing is permitted during daylight hours and dependent on natural snowfall. There are no ski rentals. Additional winter recreation information. Weather permitting, Mill Creek MetroParks offers cross-country skiing in the following areas:
- Mill Creek Golf Course.
- Par 3 Golf Course.
- East Golf Hike and Bike Trail.
- East Cohasset Hike and Bike Trail.
- Chestnut Hill Drive.
- Calvary Run Drive.
- MetroParks Bikeway.
- Gorby Family Championship Cross Country Course.
Mosquito Lake State Park. 1439 Wilson Sharpsville Road, Cortland 44410. 330-637-2856. The state park permits cross-country skiing on Turkey Run Trail. Visitors can pick up trail maps at the park office.
Roosevelt Park. 800 Struthers-Liberty Road, Campbell 44405. 330-755-7445. Permits cross-country skiing.
Henry Stambaugh Golf Course. 202 Gypsy Lane, Youngstown 44504. 330-743-5370. Permits cross-country skiing in designated areas.

Skating (inline)
Austintown Township Park. 6000 Kirk Road, Austintown 44515. 330-799-6989. Township park offers a metered walking trail.
Boardman Township Park. 375 Boardman-Poland Road, Boardman 44512. 330-726-8105. Offers paved drives throughout the park.
Mill Creek MetroParks. 7574 Columbiana-Canfield Road, Canfield 44406. 330-702-3000. Offers 21 miles of roads and designated areas for inline skating, including the MetroParks Bikeway, a 10.6 mile asphalt trail (from W. Western Reserve and Washingtonville roads to Salt Springs Road in Mineral Ridge).
Mosquito Lake State Park. 1439 state Route 305, Cortland 44410. 330-637-2856 (park office). Offers paved roadways for inline skating.
Niles Greenway Bike Path. Runs from County Line Road at the MetroParks Bikeway to State Street and Robbins Avenue in Niles. Asphalt, multi-use path (4.5 miles).
Perkins Park. Perkins Drive at Mahoning Avenue, Warren; 330-841-2641. Asphalt path of varying grades for jogging and inline skating.
Stavich Bicycle Trail. Asphalt, 10-mile bicycle trail runs from Struthers and Lowellville to New Castle (state Route 289/Broad Street and Coit Road to West Washington Street in New Castle). Cyclists share the trail with online skaters and walkers. The gently rolling bicycle path is wheelchair accessible. Part of the National Recreation Trail.
Wick Park. 260 Park Ave., Youngstown 44504; 330-742-8711. The 34.14-acre city park features an asphalt path around the perimeter. Also popular with walkers and joggers.
Skating (roller)
Cortland Roller Rink. 290 S. High St., Cortland 44410. 330-537-4078. cortlandrollerrink.com. Offers a 180-by-80-foot competition maple hardwood floor, retro arcade games, state-of-the art sound system/light show (with live DJs) and a snack bar.
Olympic Fun Center. 4070 E. State St., Hermitage, Pa. 16148. 724-981-3374. olympicfuncenter.com. Offers roller skating, laser tag, a climbing rock wall, arcade games, snack bar and a play zone.
Youngstown Skate. 7080 Tiffany Blvd., Boardman 44512. 330-758-8711. youngstownskates.com. Features an open, hardwood maple floor measuring 185-by-85 feet. Rink offers family-skate nights, adult-skate nights, open skates, private parties, group and private lessons.
Sledding
Crandall Park. Tod Lane at Redondo Road, Youngstown 44504. 330-742-8711. The 41.55-acre park allows sledding at various locations in the park.
James L. Wick Jr. Recreation Area. Mill Creek MetroParks, Youngstown 44509. 330-740-7114. Sled Hill offers a lighted sledding hill, a warming shelter and the Wick Recreation Center. Offers Hobbit Hill (for children 48 inches and under). Family-friendly site with a concessions area and bathrooms. Bring your own sleds. No rentals. Free.

Geneva State Park. 4499 Padanarum Road, Geneva 44041. 330-466-8400. The 696-acre state park offers a 4.5-mile snowmobiling trail.
Maurice K. Goddard State Park. 684 Lake Wilhelm Road, Sandy Lake, Pa. 16145. 724-253-4833. Offers snowmobiling on the paved section of the 12-mile John C. Oliver Multi-Purpose Trail Loop as well as the paved north side of the lake. The south side of the trail offers hiking, biking and cross-country skiing.
Mosquito Lake State Park. 1439 Wilson Sharpsville Road, Cortland 44410. 330-637-2856. Weather conditions permitting, snowmobiling is allowed on Horse Trail and Turkey Run Trail. No snowmobiles are allowed on the shoreline or frozen lake.
West Branch State Park. 5570 Esworthy Road, Ravenna 44266. 330-296-3239. Offers snowmobile trails. When conditions permit, the state park offers cross-country skiing, ice fishing and ice boating. Call the Trail hotline at 330-235-0028 for updated information on trail conditions.
Western Reserve Greenway. Warren Trailhead: Western Reserve Greenway and Garrett Wonders Bike Trail, 440 N. River Road NE, Warren 44483. 330-675-3072. Offers a parking lot. The 43-mile Western Reserve Greenway offers the largest public snowmobile trail in Ohio. The trail begins near Warren and is about 30 minutes from Youngstown. Trail end points: N. River Road NW, Warren and W. 52nd St., Ashtabula. The Greenway is managed by Trumbull County MetroParks (330-675-3072) and Ashtabula County Metroparks (440-576-0717).
