Jazz Age Youngstown Homes in 1927 – This photo collection depicts the homes of Youngstown’s upper class during the 1920s. The decade saw explosive growth in the city’s population. It was also a period of increased wealth for Youngstown’s professional class.
This collection captures city homes and large estates on the North and South sides and suburban Boardman. Many were designed in traditional styles, including Tudor, Spanish Revival, Colonial Revival and Italian Renaissance.
Landscaping typically complemented a home’s architectural style. Formal houses tended to have traditional landscaping. Homes in pastoral settings often had informal, rambling landscapes. Either way, these landscapes provide additional insight into the styles of the day. They’re also useful for people looking to recreate a period landscape at their home.
