Mercy Health recommends back-to-school wellness checklist

A yearly checkup gives children and parents time to discuss overall health, track growth and development and address concerns before the school year gets busy.

New routines, earlier mornings and busy schedules can make the transition back to school challenging for children and families. As families check off school supplies, Mercy Health primary care physicians encourage them to check in on their child’s health. Annual visits, updated vaccinations and healthy routines can help children start the school year feeling their best.

“Kids usually don’t go from summer schedules to school schedules overnight,” said Dr. Jill Haltigan, primary care physician with Mercy Health. “Making small changes in the weeks before school starts, like adjusting bedtime, returning to regular meal schedules and creating consistent routines, can make the transition much easier for the entire family.”

Mercy Health physicians recommend families check these items off their back-to-school health checklist:

Schedule an annual wellness visit

A yearly checkup gives children and parents time to discuss overall health, track growth and development and address concerns before the school year gets busy. Visits also provide an opportunity to discuss nutrition, sleep, mental health, sports participation and any questions parents may have.

“Sometimes the biggest benefit of an annual checkup is simply having time to talk,” said Haltigan. “It gives us a chance to make sure children are growing well, answer questions and identify any concerns that could affect their health or ability to learn.”

Make sure vaccinations are up to date

Back-to-school season is a good time for families to review their child’s immunization record. Depending on a student’s age, they may be due for routine vaccinations, including Tdap, meningococcal or HPV vaccines. Families should also talk with their provider about the annual flu vaccine as flu season approaches.

Staying current on immunizations helps protect children from serious illness, reduces the spread of preventable diseases in schools and helps keep students healthy, in the classroom and ready to learn.

Reset healthy sleep and daily routines

Children may need time to adjust after a more relaxed summer schedule. Physicians recommend gradually moving bedtime earlier, limiting screen time before bed and establishing consistent wake-up routines before the first day of school.

Fuel growing bodies with healthy choices

Balanced meals and snacks, along with staying hydrated, can help children maintain energy and focus throughout the school day. Families can support healthy habits by incorporating fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains into daily meals.

Reinforce habits that prevent illness

As students return to classrooms and spend more time around others, everyday habits can help reduce the spread of germs. Physicians encourage children to wash their hands regularly, cover coughs and sneezes, avoid sharing drinks or utensils and stay home when they are sick.

“Children do better in school when they are healthy, rested and have predictable routines,” added Dr. Benjamin Brocker, primary care physician with Mercy Health. “Taking time to prepare before school starts can help families feel more confident and give children the foundation they need for a successful year.”
