Opera Western Reserve will present a live performance of the one-act opera “The Voice” next month at Penguin City Brewing Company.
The performance occurs 6 p.m., Wednesday, June 10. OWR General Director Scott Skiba is director.
The one-act opera is sung in English and was composed in 1958 by Francis Poulenc, based on the play “La Voix Humaine” by Jean Cocteau.
General admission tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Tickets can be obtained by calling 330-259-9651, online or by visiting the DeYor box office (260 W. Federal St., Youngstown) during business hours.
“The Voice” tells the story of a woman – known only as Elle – as she engages in a final phone call with her lover who has left her for another woman. As the conversation unfolds in real time, the audience witnesses Elle’s emotional unravelling.
The performance takes place in Penguin City’s Taproom and includes raffle items, a cash bar and Suzie’s food truck.
“OWR launched this alternative venue programming last spring with a riveting production of Argento’s ‘Miss Havisham’s Wedding Night,’ said Skiba. “We’re excited to continue this programming with a gripping production of ‘The Voice’ and to explore this new partnership with Penguin City and to reach new audiences with the power of the human voice as only possible through opera theater!”
Other: VIP table packages are available. A table of eight is $300. Four at a table is $160. VIP tables include one drink per guest and a charcuterie board from Jimmy’s Italian Specialties. Sponsorship packages are also available. Visit the Opera Western Reserve website for more information.
