Mahoning Valley Geology, Earth Science and Mineralogy will meet in western Ohio on Saturday for a field trip and fossil search.
The field trip takes place 11 a.m. at Fossil Park in Sylvania and is open to all experience levels. Admission, parking and public fossil hunting are free. The park’s collecting quarry is ADA-accessible.
The park’s fossil-bearing shale holds the remains of a shallow Devonian sea, including brachiopods and corals.
Participants can search the designated collecting area and take their fossils home. Visitors should bring a container for their finds, water and sun protection. Park staff will provide a brief introduction and help identifying fossil finds.
The park does not allow collecting tools such as hammers, picks or shovels. Anyone with specific access questions can contact MVGEM at MV******@***il.com before the trip.
People who cannot make the Sylvania trip can see the group’s collected fossils during an Oct. 10 event in Warren. MVGEM will display the group’s finds, additional minerals and geology specimens at the Old Erie #3 Craft & Artisan Show at the Warren Masonic Temple, 112 Pine Ave. NE. The show takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
About: Mahoning Valley Geology, Earth Science and Mineralogy is a new Warren-based group developing accessible, low-barrier field trips, education, swaps and eventually hands-on lapidary opportunities for the Mahoning Valley. For information, email MV******@***il.com.
