The Raymond John Wean Foundation is recognizing Period Poverty Awareness Week, May 11-17, a national observance calling attention to the issue of period poverty and the effect it has on people who menstruate.

The Alliance for Period Supplies reports that two in five people have struggled to purchase period products, while one in three low-income individuals report missing work, school or similar events due to a lack of access to period supplies.

In recognition of the issue, the Wean Foundation is donating period products to SWAG (Sisters Welcome All Generations), a Warren-based nonprofit that educates women about the importance of self-love and empowerment.

SWAG will kick off a period products drive and awareness campaign today, May 15, which will continue throughout the summer. SWAG is encouraging donations of pads, tampons, liners, wipes, deodorant, soap and other hygiene essentials that will go directly to local students, families and women in need in the community. Donations can be dropped off at Grace AME Church at 1137 Main Ave. in Warren, or a pickup can be arranged by emailing sw************@***il.com.

In addition to the products drive, SWAG will be hosting hygiene workshops focusing on education, self-care and hygiene awareness. The workshops are meant to give young girls a space to have open conversations in a safe and comfortable environment. For more information on SWAG’s workshops and events, follow the nonprofit on Facebook.

“This effort is about more than products,” said Honeya Price, founder of SWAG and Ward 6 councilwoman. “We want young girls to know they are seen, supported and never have to suffer in silence or feel ashamed to ask for help. By providing these essentials, we are removing barriers that can affect education, self-esteem, mental health and daily life.”

Last year, the Wean Foundation’s own period products drive resulted in more than 5,800 product donations, which were distributed to local schools and programs.

“While we are proud of the impact we made, the need continues to exist,” said Wean Foundation President Jennifer Roller. “Far too many students and families still struggle to access basic menstrual hygiene products. We remain committed to this initiative and are proud to support SWAG to continue raising awareness, reducing stigma and ensuring everyone has access to the products they need.”
